Blackwater diving is a night dive in open ocean, away from a reef, over deep water.

What is Blackwater Diving

Diving at night, in open ocean, waiting for the creatures of the deep to arrive.

In blackwater diving, you’re not exploring the night on a reef or rocky shore but you are out in the open ocean, typicallly over extreamly deep water.  Powerful lights are suspended in the water column and these are used not only as a reference to the divers, but also as an attraction to the creatures of the deep that come up to feed.  The migration of creatures from the deep to shallower depths is the largest migration of species on the planet – and it happens every night of the year, right here in the strait between Cozumel and Playa del Carmen.  In Cozumel we are extreamly fortunate that close to the coast there is a deep drop-off, this aided with the strong currents creates a funnel effect.  The dive is not static and in any one evening, the divers could drift up to 7 – 8 miles.
